NASA in Nauvoo- Cosmic Chills: Vampire Stars, Black Widow Pulsars and Dark Energy
October 21, 2023, time: 2-3pm at Nauvoo City Hall

 Technology Solar System Ambassador
In this month’s special Halloween edition of “NASA in Nauvoo” we will hear about some of the
most terrifying objects in space: Vampire Stars! Learn of the vampiric binary systems where two
stars are close together, and one star may “suck” the atmosphere of another. Black Widow
Pulsars! The Fermi Gamma-ray space telescope unveiled a host of “Black Widow” pulsars
destroying their companions. Dark Energy! A phenomenon accelerating the expansion of
spacetime without substantial explanation.

This free (for all ages!) public event is hosted by the Nauvoo Public Library and will be held
October 21st from 2-3pm at the Nauvoo City Hall. The event will be co-hosted by Mellissa
Smith, our local NASA/JPL California Institute of Technology Solar System Ambassador, and
will include information and photos of these amazing cosmic chills, a short question and answer
period, and a fun activity! “NASA in Nauvoo” is a monthly program hosted by the Nauvoo
Library and information can be found on the Nauvoo Public Library website.

The Solar System Ambassadors Program of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory
offers information and excitement about real missions that explore our solar system.
Volunteer ambassadors in communities throughout the country are selected by JPL based
on their backgrounds and on their plans for public outreach activities. JPL provides
ambassadors with educational materials and training. However, the opinions of
Ambassadors are not necessarily those of NASA or JPL. Further information about the
Solar System Ambassadors Program is available at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/ambassador.
JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif.
